THE NIGHTINGALE @ ATRIA SHOPPING GALLERY

It was the last girls' session of the year 2016 with my very dear friend of 17 years aka my Darling/Drinking Buddy, before she flew off to Japan for the New Year's celebration. We decided to hang out and sip some cocktails at this relatively new bar called The Nightingale. The Nightingale is an intimate bar, occupying the back of Atria Shopping Gallery’s Spitalfield restaurant. It is hidden behind an old London telephone booth and also a book shelf inside the restaurant. Kinda mysterious, eh? Hehe. Wait til you see the list of their cocktails :D

There were not many people around at that time. An extensive range of alcohol, from wine to whiskey, was displayed on the shelves behind the bar and they were playing latest hits from the current music charts in the background. We chose to sit on the sofas (more comfy) and the friendly waitress brought us the menu. We looked through the menu and chose our drinks. When one thinks of a cocktail, one usually thinks of Margaritas, Mojitos or Martinis, but in The Nightingale, you will find some unique ones with names like Madz Walk Beside Hendrix, Reality Bites and 51st Date. What makes them even more special is that each drink comes with its own individual canape/complimentary food pairing, which is carefully chosen to complement the cocktail. The complimentary canapes are not listed in the menu, so.... SURPRISE!! :D

Here's my pick for that night:
Tropical Depression (RM38).
Tropical Depression - the first one and the most potent on the list (According to the waitress)! Hehe! It's made with Sailor's Jerry Spice Rum, Martell VSOP, Bombay Sapphire, Falernum Syrup, Freshly Squeezed Lime Juice, Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice, Pineapple Juice and a touch of Homemade Pineapple Honey Syrup. Strong, yet refreshing - me likey! This came with Edamame beans, served in a golden skull decor. Odd... But the mild/bland taste of edamame beans worked well to balance out the strong Rum flavor. Impressive! And, check out the presentation! Darn cool, right?

My Darling was more conservative. She wanted something more fruity and sweet, so the waitress recommended either Tranquilo Amigo or Sunshine, and she chose the latter. Sunshine is made with Martell VSOP, Cointreau, Orange Marmalade, Physalis Fruit, Freshly Squeezed Lemon Juice, Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice, Clover Honey and a dash of Orange Bitter, and it was served with a mussel - Another odd combo. Very refreshing but it was sort of like a Tequila Sunrise to me, because of the orange taste. Oh, see those white thingy on the rim of the glass? They are not salt, but desiccated coconut :P
Sunshine (RM35).
After the cocktails, we went on with our usual Guinness. They were having promo at that time - RM18++ for a full pint of Guinness, all night long. It was pretty good, creamy, and not watered down like what some pubs/bars do during their happy hour promotions.
Look for the hidden door in the telephone booth. *Hint: It's to your left :P
Comprehensively stocked with all the alcohol you can handle!
Verdict: I'd say The Nightingale sits pretty high up on the list of my favorite places to chill. Awesome drinks, excellent ambience, nice music and friendly service - Absolutely loved it. I'll definitely go back again and would highly recommend it to friends :D

YACON SOUP WITH CORN AND CARROT

Was shopping at the usual supermarket recently when I saw a lady promoting something which, from far, looked like sweet potatoes to me. I didn't pay attention to her til she called out to me and handed me a piece to sample. She was promoting organic yacons, not sweet potato. The moment I put it into my mouth, I remembered eating this looong time ago, but because I seldom see it in the supermarkets, I had totally forgotten about such a thing.  The yacon is a traditionally grown for its crisp, sweet-tasting, tuberous roots. Though the root looks like a   sweet potato, the taste and texture are completely different. Its crispy texture, juiciness and mildly sweet taste makes it somewhat similar to water chestnut or snow pear. It can be eaten raw or cook. It is said that yacon  is very high in fiber and low in calories which makes it a healthy and nutritious snack.   Some of the health benefits of yacon include its ability to regulate blood sugar ...

LEAN'S @ ATRIA SHOPPING GALLERY

Tong sui are a Cantonese specialty. If you've grown up in a Cantonese family, you must have had tong sui before. The term 'tong sui' literally means 'sugar water'. It is a collective term for any sweet, warm soup or custard served as a dessert at the end of a meal in Cantonese cuisine. My dad is a huge fan of tong sui : red bean soup, peanut soup, barley ginkgo and black sesame soup being his favorite. I'm not really a tong sui person but I remember seeing this Lean's place in Atria that sells a variety of desserts, including tong sui , nyonya kuihs and light meals, so I brought my dad there to try when my parents came over. It was afternoon teatime when we arrived. We were feeling a little hungry, so we ordered 2 nasi lemak bungkus, a cucur udang, steam cakes for my LO, black sesame cream, barley ginkgo and bubur cha cha. Nasi Lemak bungkus (RM3.70). Cucur udang (RM3). Pandan and vanilla steam cake (RM1.50 each). Nasi lemak is a famous lo...

CHINESE ARROWROOT SOUP WITH PORK BONES

This is the simple version of the Chinese arrowroot soup (Also known as 粉葛湯 'Fun Kot Tong' in Cantonese). Our family love drinking this soup. It is tasty and cooking it with pork bones and dried squid makes it sweet and refreshing. Some people who like boiling arrowroot together with lotus roots or peanuts, and my mother-in-law usually boils it on its own and drink as 'cooling' tea. Naturally sweet and tasty. If you don't like seafood, you can choose to omit the dried squid. This is how the Chinese arrowroot looks like.  The arrowroot is a type of root plant similar to taro, potato or tapioca. However, it is harder in texture and incredibly starchy. When it is cut up, it has patterns that looks like the ages of a tree trunk. It is usually made into powder and used as thicken agent in cooking. The arrowroot is high in protein and fiber which is very beneficial to our body. Ingredients: 1 medium-sized Chinese arrowroot (Approx 700g) 10 red dates, ...
