MAMA KIM SAUNA MEE @ PUCHONG

A friend of mine recommended me to this Mama Kim restaurant recently. She said it's a fairly new restaurant and it seems to be always crowded every time she passes by, so it must be good. Apparently they are not new, but I think they just moved to this new location - a 3-storey building in which Mama Kim occupies the Ground floor and the 2 upper floors occupied by HerbaLine Facial Spa (under the same company/group). 

Despite the fact that people are trending toward more health-conscious eating, whenever we mention 'healthy meal/food', most people still think it simply means bland or tasteless food. In Mama Kim, they claim to serve nutritionally balanced, yet delicious food. As their slogan says, 'where healthy is yummy', Mama Kim aims to serve real food with low salt, no white sugar, no white flour, less oil, and no MSG.

You can choose to have it with the mushroom rice noodles (as in the picture), or with a bowl of brown rice.
This is Mama Kim's Signature dish: Sauna Mee. Almost every table ordered this, so I would say it's a must-try for first timers. It is served in a very hot claypot, and yes, I do mean PIPING HOT! The waiter/waitress will pour the soup/broth into the claypot after serving. BEWARE that when they are doing so, bits of the hot soup WILL splash everywhere, so do move back (Nobody bothered warning us). It would be nice to eat this during a rainy cold day as it is a hearty dish to warm the stomach, however, I find the amount of ingredients was kinda... Pathetic. I do understand their concept is to serve an 80% veggies and 20% meat diet BUT to the extent of giving a small section of a corncob (still acceptable), a few small slices of bean curd skin (OK....), 2 small romaine lettuce leaves, few strands of golden needle mushrooms, probably less than 1 oyster mushroom - torn into thin strips, and 4 small slices of fish that were as thin as paper? Hmm... And perhaps I'm a big eater, I didn't fill full though I had mine with a bowl of rice >.<
Herbal Chicken Chop (RM9.90)

2 of my friends ordered this Herbal Chicken Chop, served with brown rice. Honestly, I'm not sure which part of it tasted like herbs. I could only taste the saltiness from the gravy and melted cheese on top of it. Still, taste is totally subjective coz one friend liked it but another thought it was bad, so....

Hubby ordered this Cheesy Chicken Chop. It was the last to arrive, like forever, when the rest of us were almost done with our food! We had to ask the waiter twice to check on it. The first time we asked, he did not bother to come back to us after saying that he would check. The second time we asked, we were told that it would be served soon.... well, 15 mins later. From the looks of it, it was almost similar to the Herbal Chicken Chop. The taste was pretty similar too - also salty. What's worse was, they used small pieces (almost like minced) meat, put them together into a flat round shape and called it a 'chicken chop'. -_-"
Not sure what gravy they used but it tasted like water + corn starch + some carrot bits + tiny pinch of ground black pepper + salt.
Natural Fruit & Flower Tea (RM11.90).
Well, at least the tea was good - refreshing and mildly sweet, like all fruit teas. This pot is enough for 2-3 pax.

Verdict: Though they claim to serve food with low salt, no white sugar, no white flour, less oil, and no MSG, I find their food a little on the salty side and do contain pretty heavy seasoning ( Hubby, me and another friend felt thirsty after heading back home that night). Prices are reasonable, considering the environment of the restaurant, but we didn't feel satiated after the meal.

Was shopping at the usual supermarket recently when I saw a lady promoting something which, from far, looked like sweet potatoes to me. CHINESE ARROWROOT SOUP WITH PORK BONES

This is the simple version of the Chinese arrowroot soup (Also known as 粉葛湯 'Fun Kot Tong' in Cantonese). Our family love drinking this soup. It is tasty and cooking it with pork bones and dried squid makes it sweet and refreshing. Some people who like boiling arrowroot together with lotus roots or peanuts, and my mother-in-law usually boils it on its own and drink as 'cooling' tea. Naturally sweet and tasty. If you don't like seafood, you can choose to omit the dried squid. This is how the Chinese arrowroot looks like.  The arrowroot is a type of root plant similar to taro, potato or tapioca. However, it is harder in texture and incredibly starchy. When it is cut up, it has patterns that looks like the ages of a tree trunk. Tong sui are a Cantonese specialty. If you've grown up in a Cantonese family, you must have had tong sui before. The term 'tong sui' literally means 'sugar water'. It is a collective term for any sweet, warm soup or custard served as a dessert at the end of a meal in Cantonese cuisine.
