BEAN BROTHERS @ SUNWAY DAMANSARA

Met up with my Bestie last Saturday - a catch up of what we have been up to over the past few weeks, and the location this time was at Bean Brothers. Bean Brothers is a Korean-operated coffee bar tugged deep on a secluded street in Sunway Damansara. Operating in a huge two-level factory lot, this raw and rustic-style cafe with plenty of natural light during the day makes it a big hit for people who enjoy taking photos for social media. Got to this place with the help of Waze/GPS Navigation app (Made a wrong turning - one turning earlier than the right one.. Oops!). No idea why Bean Brothers Malaysia chose such a hidden industrial area instead of in shopping malls, but I guess good things are worth searching for?

Circular counter at the center of the cafe.
The cafe is filled with intricate photogenic corners, so it's time to put your creativity to the test :P
The upper floor is constructed with a hollowed center, overlooking the counter downstairs.
Seats go around the 360° hollowed area, allowing patrons to have a bird-eye view of the baristas at work.
Can't imagine this is what the outside looks like, right? Haha.
Coffee is taken seriously here, with beans roasted in Bean Brothers' home nation. The House-blend: Black Suit (nutty flavored) and Velvet White (fruity tea-like), covers for both black and white. Each serving of coffee costs RM12, whether it's black or white. Foodwise, they serve the cafe's own-baked cakes/tarts/cookies and a limited selection of brunch dishes. Please do take note that the kitchen closes at 4.30pm! As we were wondering what to order, one of the friendly barristas recommended us the Asbaragus and the Earl Grey tart. Since Bestie had already eaten, she took the tart and I went with the Asbaragus, besides a Black Suit flat white and a Velvet White flat white. Collected our drinks and tart when the buzzer vibrated and were told that they would send my brunch over when it's ready.

The two flat whites (Top: Black Suit and bottom: Velvet White)  + tart.
I preferred the Velvet White. It's slightly sweeter and smoother.
The Earl Grey tart (RM13).
Seemed more like a chocolate tart with finely chopped tea leaves, added directly to the cream topping.
I love Earl Grey. I have had innumerable cups of Earl Grey tea, which, it seems, I just can’t get enough of. I love drinking it without milk and sugar, simply enjoying the lemon aroma, delicate smoky and fragrant taste of this black tea. But for this tart, the outcome wasn't what I expected. I felt the tea was overwhelmed by the dark chocolate taste. The texture of the dark chocolate ganache filling was smooth, but the flavor of the tea did not shine as I had hoped.

Asbaragus (RM30).
Bacon wrapped asparagus, served with a slice of toast bread, poached egg and salad.
This fared better. The asparagus stalks were tender but I would have preferred the bacon to be more crispy. I've asked them to leave out the roasted cherry tomatoes coz I don't like eating tomatoes :P

Overall, service was friendly (There were a couple of good looking staffs too. Hehe) and coffee was good. Try their Velvet White, loved it! So, if you like to go somewhere hidden to chill, enjoy some good coffee and take lotsa photos, try Bean Brothers!

YACON SOUP WITH CORN AND CARROT

Was shopping at the usual supermarket recently when I saw a lady promoting something which, from far, looked like sweet potatoes to me. I didn't pay attention to her til she called out to me and handed me a piece to sample. She was promoting organic yacons, not sweet potato. The moment I put it into my mouth, I remembered eating this looong time ago, but because I seldom see it in the supermarkets, I had totally forgotten about such a thing.  The yacon is a traditionally grown for its crisp, sweet-tasting, tuberous roots. Though the root looks like a   sweet potato, the taste and texture are completely different. Its crispy texture, juiciness and mildly sweet taste makes it somewhat similar to water chestnut or snow pear. It can be eaten raw or cook. It is said that yacon  is very high in fiber and low in calories which makes it a healthy and nutritious snack.   Some of the health benefits of yacon include its ability to regulate blood sugar levels, lower 'bad'  choles

CHINESE ARROWROOT SOUP WITH PORK BONES

This is the simple version of the Chinese arrowroot soup (Also known as 粉葛湯 'Fun Kot Tong' in Cantonese). Our family love drinking this soup. It is tasty and cooking it with pork bones and dried squid makes it sweet and refreshing. Some people who like boiling arrowroot together with lotus roots or peanuts, and my mother-in-law usually boils it on its own and drink as 'cooling' tea. Naturally sweet and tasty. If you don't like seafood, you can choose to omit the dried squid. This is how the Chinese arrowroot looks like.  The arrowroot is a type of root plant similar to taro, potato or tapioca. However, it is harder in texture and incredibly starchy. When it is cut up, it has patterns that looks like the ages of a tree trunk. It is usually made into powder and used as thicken agent in cooking. The arrowroot is high in protein and fiber which is very beneficial to our body. Ingredients: 1 medium-sized Chinese arrowroot (Approx 700g) 10 red dates,

LEAN'S @ ATRIA SHOPPING GALLERY

Tong sui are a Cantonese specialty. If you've grown up in a Cantonese family, you must have had tong sui before. The term 'tong sui' literally means 'sugar water'. It is a collective term for any sweet, warm soup or custard served as a dessert at the end of a meal in Cantonese cuisine. My dad is a huge fan of tong sui : red bean soup, peanut soup, barley ginkgo and black sesame soup being his favorite. I'm not really a tong sui person but I remember seeing this Lean's place in Atria that sells a variety of desserts, including tong sui , nyonya kuihs and light meals, so I brought my dad there to try when my parents came over. It was afternoon teatime when we arrived. We were feeling a little hungry, so we ordered 2 nasi lemak bungkus, a cucur udang, steam cakes for my LO, black sesame cream, barley ginkgo and bubur cha cha. Nasi Lemak bungkus (RM3.70). Cucur udang (RM3). Pandan and vanilla steam cake (RM1.50 each). Nasi lemak is a famous lo
