AMERICAN GINSENG ROOT FIBER SOUP WITH CHICKEN AND RED DATES

This is one good soup for nourish & rejuvenate oneself.
American Ginseng Root Fibers or Yang Sheng Xu.
American Ginseng Root Fibers (Known as Yang Sheng Xu in Chinese) are low-quality fibers taken from the rootstock of the Panax Quinquefolium (American Ginseng) plant and are one of the cheapest types of ginseng you can find in the market. Some call them 'Beards' as its Chinese name 洋参 (Yang Sheng) 须 (Xu) literally translates to American Ginseng 'beards'. They are fine fibers, which are the very ends of the ginseng roots, having a bittersweet flavor and aroma typical of ginseng, and are used as a nutritional supplement in order to support neuro-physical and organ health. A well known property of this ginseng is that it is cooling and can help to reduce heatiness in the body. Some people like boiling them in water for 10-15 mins and add a pinch of salt before drinking but I prefer double boiling them for a couple of hours to really bring out the lovely herby taste :)


Ingredients :


  • Approx 20g American ginseng root fibers
  • 10 red dates, pits removed
  • Approx 10g yu zhu/Solomon's Seal Rhizome
  • 1 tbsp gojiberries
  • 1/2 chicken, cut into pieces
  • 1000ml water


  1. Blanch chicken in boiling water for 5 minutes. Rinse and set aside.
  2. Rinse the rest of the ingredients and set aside.
  3. Put all ingredients together with water into an electric double boiler and set timer to 3 hours. You can season with some salt before serving if you like. Enjoy :)

Tong sui are a Cantonese specialty. If you've grown up in a Cantonese family, you must have had tong sui before. The term 'tong sui' literally means 'sugar water'. It is a collective term for any sweet, warm soup or custard served as a dessert at the end of a meal in Cantonese cuisine. LOTUS ROOT SOUP V BLACK BEANS, WALNUTS & LOTUS SEEDS

My all time favorite: lotus root! This soup is said to be suitable for those with weak 'qi' & blood and blurry vision. It's also suitable to be taken during the confinement period as black beans can help replenish blood, promote secretion of breast milk and brighten eyesight. Yummy and nutritious. Ingredients: Approx 600g lotus root, washed and cut into pieces 1 tael (Approx 37.5g) black bean 1 tael (Approx 37.5g) walnut 5 maces (Approx 18.9g) lotus seed 5 maces (Approx 18.9g) dried longan  5 red dates, pits removed Approx 300g pork bones (For confinement, replace with 1 black-bone chicken) 2500ml water Scald pork bones in boiling water for 5 mins. Remove, rinse and set aside. Rinse and drain black beans. Heat a wok and fry the black beans without oil til the skin cracks. Set aside. Rinse remaining ingredients and set aside.
