Weather has been crazy lately; extremely hot in the afternoon and thunderstorms in the evening. Bought a bottle gourd to boil soup to help 'clear heat'. This time I've chosen to boil this melon soup with corn silk and pork bones. The reason why it is called 'melon' soup is because all the 3 main ingredients; papaya (木瓜), bottle gourd (葫芦瓜) and chayote squash (佛手瓜) are called 瓜 (meaning melon) in Chinese. This soup is said to be suitable for those with dry skin as chayote can help to enhance skin condition and beauty, and those who suffer from poor circulation from prolonged hours of sitting as corn silk and bottle gourd can help to relieve edema. It is also good for those who suffer from constipation, high blood pressure and high blood sugar.

As I have mentioned before, corn silk are very nutritious as it can help to promote diuresis, dispel heat and improve the function of gallbladder. I cook corns quite often coz my LO loves it, so I usually keep them every time I cook one, or you can get them from Chinese medicine shop.
Ingredients:
- 1 green papaya
- 1 bottle gourd
- 2 chayote gourd/squash
- 2 maces (Approx 7.6g) corn silk
- 1 tael (Approx 37.5g) lily bulb
- 3 dried scallops
- 4 honey dates
- Approx 300g pork bones
- Scald pork bones in boiling water for 5 minutes. Rinse and set aside.
- Soak dried scallops til soft.
- Rinse and clean corn silk thoroughly. Drain well and set aside. Rinse honey dates and lily bulbs and set aside.
- Peel papaya and bottle gourd, remove seeds and cut into big pieces. Rinse chayote squash, remove seed and cut into quarters.
- Put all ingredients in a pot together with 3000ml water. Bring to a boil over high heat. Turn to low heat and simmer for 3 hours. Serve.
