GREAT HALL @ ONE CITY USJ

This is my second visit to One City Mall USJ. First time was to visit the skyroof, to step on the see-through glass floor, where one can see whatever that is under his/her feet and feel the glass wobble when the wind blows or when someone walks pass <Supposedly not for the faint-hearted :P> But due to poor maintenance, the glasses are now dirty and I can't really see what's below clearly anymore >.< Then, some picture I saw caught my attention, so here I am again, to the Great Hall this time.

The Great Hall @ One City Mall USJ offers a wide variety of drinks and food with interesting China references (Chairman Mao's revolutionary spirit, to be exact). They serve whimsical recipes like 'Mao's Mushroom Moustache' & 'Mao & His Chips' and drinks like 'Mao's Chamber' & 'Mao's Eden'.
Nu Er Hong (RM60).
Pour and drink from a bowl :)
This is the reason why I'm here. Hehe. Nu er hong (女儿红) is a variety of huangjiu (yellow wine) and is made of glutinous rice and wheat. This wine evolved from the Shaoxing tradition of burying nu er hong underground when a daughter is born, and digging it up for the wedding banquet when the daughter is to be married. In Great Hall, this is a cocktail (Combination of rice wine and tropical fruits) - vibrant, strong and unforgettable, as claimed in the menu, BUT that wasn't the case. Fruity, yes, but definitely not strong. We couldn't really taste the rice wine in it. It was more like a mocktail, so I find the price a lil expensive. However, pouring and drinking it from a bowl did make me feel like I'm in those Chinese kung fu movies. Haha.
Back: Mao's Eden (RM7.90) and Front: Summer's Bloom (RM8.90).
Both are tea; Mao's Eden - A harmonious tea concoctions of grapefruit, pineapple & mango, and Summer's Bloom - Great Hall's special tea blend of Rosella, apple and strawberry. I liked both. They were refreshing and delicious.

As for food, here's what we ordered:
The Hainanese Chick (Hainanese-style chicken chop) - Fried chicken Maryland doused in an oriental-inspired sauce (RM15.90).
Angel's Mane - Pork stew stir-fried with angel's hair (RM14.90).
Tandoori Meatball Pasta - Tandoori-inspired meatball pasta (RM15.90).
Secret Duck Victory - Duck confit served with white rice and stir-fried seasonal vegetables (RM18.90).
Only one word to describe the food at Great Hall: SALTY!!! The Champion of them all was the Hainanese Chick. If you take away the salt, the chicken and sauce were literally tasteless -_- And the so-called pork stew in Angel's Mane? It was pure fats with no meat. Plus, I am pretty sure it tasted exactly like this canned stewed pork chops:
Picture taken from the Internet. I'm sure some of you have tried this before.
The rest were so so, nothing to shout about. The duck confit wasn't as juicy as they claimed either. The only two things that were not bad were:
Mao & His Chips (RM12.90). Crispy potato chips and it's refillable.
And

Great Gui Fa Gao - Cold sweet osmanthus jelly paired with creamy ginger lemongrass sauce (RM6.90).
Verdict: In my opinion, the drinks are a little pricey. Food prices are reasonable but the food taste bad. So, will I be back? Definitely NO.

YACON SOUP WITH CORN AND CARROT

Was shopping at the usual supermarket recently when I saw a lady promoting something which, from far, looked like sweet potatoes to me. I didn't pay attention to her til she called out to me and handed me a piece to sample. She was promoting organic yacons, not sweet potato. The moment I put it into my mouth, I remembered eating this looong time ago, but because I seldom see it in the supermarkets, I had totally forgotten about such a thing.  The yacon is a traditionally grown for its crisp, sweet-tasting, tuberous roots. Though the root looks like a   sweet potato, the taste and texture are completely different. Its crispy texture, juiciness and mildly sweet taste makes it somewhat similar to water chestnut or snow pear. It can be eaten raw or cook. It is said that yacon  is very high in fiber and low in calories which makes it a healthy and nutritious snack.   Some of the health benefits of yacon include its ability to regulate blood sugar levels, lower 'bad'  choles

CHINESE ARROWROOT SOUP WITH PORK BONES

This is the simple version of the Chinese arrowroot soup (Also known as 粉葛湯 'Fun Kot Tong' in Cantonese). Our family love drinking this soup. It is tasty and cooking it with pork bones and dried squid makes it sweet and refreshing. Some people who like boiling arrowroot together with lotus roots or peanuts, and my mother-in-law usually boils it on its own and drink as 'cooling' tea. Naturally sweet and tasty. If you don't like seafood, you can choose to omit the dried squid. This is how the Chinese arrowroot looks like.  The arrowroot is a type of root plant similar to taro, potato or tapioca. However, it is harder in texture and incredibly starchy. When it is cut up, it has patterns that looks like the ages of a tree trunk. It is usually made into powder and used as thicken agent in cooking. The arrowroot is high in protein and fiber which is very beneficial to our body. Ingredients: 1 medium-sized Chinese arrowroot (Approx 700g) 10 red dates,

LEAN'S @ ATRIA SHOPPING GALLERY

Tong sui are a Cantonese specialty. If you've grown up in a Cantonese family, you must have had tong sui before. The term 'tong sui' literally means 'sugar water'. It is a collective term for any sweet, warm soup or custard served as a dessert at the end of a meal in Cantonese cuisine. My dad is a huge fan of tong sui : red bean soup, peanut soup, barley ginkgo and black sesame soup being his favorite. I'm not really a tong sui person but I remember seeing this Lean's place in Atria that sells a variety of desserts, including tong sui , nyonya kuihs and light meals, so I brought my dad there to try when my parents came over. It was afternoon teatime when we arrived. We were feeling a little hungry, so we ordered 2 nasi lemak bungkus, a cucur udang, steam cakes for my LO, black sesame cream, barley ginkgo and bubur cha cha. Nasi Lemak bungkus (RM3.70). Cucur udang (RM3). Pandan and vanilla steam cake (RM1.50 each). Nasi lemak is a famous lo
